I know what you're thinking. "Is the premise of this article really that I should wisely invest money in someone you're telling me sucks?" No. No advice is being given. Do what you want. But ... but ... given how wildly expensive New York Yankees prospects tend to be, and how wildly expensive anyone of note tends to be around Bowman Release Day, it's pretty weird that left-hander Henry Lalane, recently considered to be on the cusp of the top-tier of Yankees breakout candidates, is going for a relative pittance.
The usual caveats apply. Investing in breakable pitching prospects is a worse idea than staking your claim on offensive powerhouses. It doesn't help that Lalane has never really been whole; it's tough to "break" when you begin damaged. While the odds are not in his favor, I wouldn't be pointing this out if I wasn't surprised by his Week 1 values, which could dip even further when a few eyes wander from the product to other new releases.
Lalane, a massive projectible lefty who joined the Yankees' system as a teenager, was thought to be a candidate for a Top 100 leap prior to the 2024 season. That did not occur; instead, he made six appearances in 2024 and seven in 2025, none of them substantial (though he did strike out 20 men in 16 1/3 frames last year with a 1.65 ERA at Low-A Tampa).
This year, Lalane has failed to build on that progress, to say the least. His early 7.04 ERA at the same level in five outings (four starts) is a reminder that this process isn't linear. But if you don't think pre-2024 is too long ago, and you love playing the hungry New York market like a puppetmaster, then it might be worth tossing a few chips into Lalane's market a few weeks after release.
Yankees prospect Henry Lalane's value in 2026 Bowman Baseball
In a world where Bowman 1st autos of seemingly any Yankee with value can spike into the solar system, and during an early frenzy while the product is fresh, it's odd to see a Lalane base auto available at a $30 buy it now with no bites. A best offer of $14.39 was recently accepted on a base chrome auto. There are purple refractors /250 up for bid at reasonable costs.
Lalane's moundwork this year would indicate that, yes, there's a chance that even these modest investments go for naught. But seeing a tantalizing lefty who captured the imagination even two years ago - and a Yankee, no less - available at such low prices is a rare opportunity. If this is your thing (PC or otherwise), it wouldn't hurt to dabble a little and hope Lalane can steer out of the skid.
The Yankees' portion of the 2026 Bowman checklist is pretty bleak, unless you want to relive the pain of sending TJ Rumfield to the Rockies. Lalane might be its only real savior. And the cost is shockingly minimal.
