Pitching prospects bust. It's what they do. Position players are, 9.99 times out of 10, the more salient investment (Seth Hernandez of the Pirates may be the only known exception). This is not to argue that New York Yankees left-hander Henry Lalane is the smartest long-term play in the prospect collecting game right now. It just seems notable to mention that a Yankees pitcher (the team with the most regularly inflated prospect values) just reached the top spot on Baseball America's prospect hot sheet in back-to-back weeks, and his cards from the latest Bowman release are shockingly reasonably priced at this point in time.
Not to say we told you so on Henry Lalane, but now might be the time to stock up just a little bit?
Lalane spent three - count 'em, THREE! - years as a Top 100 sleeper, and made 16 total starts across those seasons instead of making the leap. He began 2026 in a similar rut, posting a 7.04 ERA in his first five outings, threatening to become a permanently overlooked member of the discard pile.
And then something clicked. Never too late. Right on time. Lalane now sports a 2.74 ERA with 81 Ks in 62 1/3 innings pitched, allowing a sparkling 0.99 WHIP. His last two starts have both been seven-inning shutouts, one with 12 Ks and one with 11. He's allowed four total hits in those starts and hasn't walked a batter. That has earned him two consecutive Baseball America nods and a potential starring role in the trade deadline festivities.
Will Henry Lalane be a Yankees prospect riser this summer, or will he change sides at trade deadline?
And there's your main remaining issue. If you think Lalane will be breaking into the rotation in the Bronx, then a $35 BIN on a base chrome auto still seems like exceptional value. If you're worried the Yankees are about to flip him to Colorado for a high-leverage reliever, your fears are warranted (but at such a reasonable price, it's probably worth the dive anyway, right?).
All we know is Lalane is a post-hype sleeper who's clicking forcefully and plays for the game's most talked-about organization. Don't sink your entire portfolio into any pitcher, but this one seems particularly undervalued.
