Over the last couple of decades, this generation of football fans and collectors have been treated to the play of multiple generational quarterbacks. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees are easy names to remember, but we have also gotten Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson just to name a few others who are either still building their resumes or ended up in that next tier down below the big three. However, no one argues that Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes isn't right up there with any quarterback to play in the NFL.
Long a top player for collectors to chase, Mahomes has pretty much everything you want. Multiple Super Bowl wins, all the counting stats you could want, and a lengthy career playing the most premium position on the best team of the last decade. Unfortunately, Mahomes' success has meant that collecting his rookie cards quickly became out of reach for a lot of hobbyists, although there are still some options for those that collect on more modest budgets.
What Patrick Mahomes rookie cards can be acquired for a reasonable price?
There is no shame if you are high roller who focuses on collecting at the top end. If you can afford to stack multiple copies of Mahomes' Silver Prizm rookie card from 2017-18, godspeed. However, not all collectors can drop many hundreds of dollars on raw cards, but they would still to dabble in collecting one of the best players in NFL history.
If you are looking for $5 rookie cards here, you are going to be disappointed. Mahomes is simply too desirable a player for that to happen. 2017 Leaf Draft Special Release #13

We'll start in the $200 or less tier even though that, too, can be too pricey for some. Mahomes' rookie card from 2017 Leaf Draft Special Release doesn't get sold overly often, but you can still get a copy for under $200 when they do pop up. This is certainly not the prettiest card, but it still counts and its relative scarcity provides some investment upside as well.
2017 Panini Donruss Optic Rookie Gridiron Kings #2

Next up is our first insert on the list in Mahomes' Gridiron Kings rookie from 2017 Optic. A raw copy will usually cost you a bit more than $200, but there is also some real upside in targeting these. PSA 10 copies appear to be quite liquid still, and the clean design will have collectors appreciating this Mahomes rookies more and more over time, making this one a solid investment.
2017 Panini Rookies & Stars #201 - Red

While this list won't include many parallels as that gets boring and tedious in a hurry, we are including the red parallel of Mahomes' 2017 Panini Rookies & Stars RC as an example that you can get parallels without completely draining your bank account. The Rookies & Stars design is pretty iconic and the parallel is a color match with the Chiefs, so it is a little surprising that you can still get raw copies for under $200. PSA 10 copies are a bit pricier, though, and have been slowly creeping up over the last six months or so.

While Mahomes' 2017 Donruss rookie looks pretty basic, don't be fooled. Not only is it an iconic Rated Rookie design with an eye-catching photo, but these are notoriously tough to get in high grades. If you get lucky (and have a keen eye), you can get a raw copy for well under $200 and send it to PSA to get a slab worth at least five times as much, assuming that it comes back a PSA 10.
2017 Panini Donruss the Elite Series #7

The Elite Series look has been around for many years and Mahomes' RC version is a classic. The cleanest raw copies of this card can push $200 on the open market, and PSA 10 copies aren't what we would call cheap, but less than mint copies do pop up with regularity at discounted prices that make this rookie surprisingly accessible.
2017 Panini Crown Royale #84

The Crown Royale design remains one of the flashiest in the hobby every year and one hopes that it survives Panini losing the licenses to NBA and NFL. The red background here matches Mahomes' team colors beautifully and you can still get them in the $120-130 range as of now, though PSA 10 copies are going for considerably more.
2017 Panini Absolute Rookie Roundup #20

Mahomes' Rookie Roundup insert from 2017 Absolute probably looks the best of all the players in that particular insert line as the red and gold works very well. Most of the time, you are going to be shelling out over $100 for a raw copy, but there are several sales in recent months for below $100. If you are patient, there is a good chance open will pop up in your price range, although you will want to assess condition closely before going too crazy.

We are getting down to it with Mahomes' rookie from 2017 Panini Playoff and it is telling that it will still set you back over $100 to get a copy this far down the list. However, this card feels like a sleeper, with a very sleek look and an action shot of Mahomes on the field. For one of the cheaper options, this card feels like it could gain favor over time and be a strong investment choice.

What?! A Mahomes rookie for around $30?! Yes, it is very possible even these days when everyone has already anointed Mahomes as a future Mount Rushmore-status Hall of Famer. Mahomes is sporting his Texas Tech uniform on the card which isn't ideal, but the RC logo is on there and with Mahomes, that is always going to hold some value.

If you are looking for an even cheaper option (or you just want some variety), 2017 Panini Elite Draft Picks has you covered. Mahomes is once again in his college uni and the picture itself isn't the most flattering, However, this early Mahomes rookie card has held value in the $25-40 range for years now and remains a top budget-friendly option today.
