Red Sox Sign Dana Eveland to a Minor League Deal

According to SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo the Red Sox have agreed to terms with lefty Dana Eveland on a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training. Eveland has bounced around a lot over the course of his career. The Red Sox will now become the 9th organization that Eveland has belonged to over the course of his career.
After missing all of 2013, Eveland’s career looked just about over. He was lucky to have latched on with the Mets, whose bullpen was like a revolving door in 2014. This gave him a chance to appear in a career high 30 games. While he only was able to throw 27 1/3 innings he was still able to impress. He posted an ERA of 2.63 and a strikeout rate of 8.89. He also earned his first save since his rookie year back in 2005.

Now he’ll get a chance to compete for a bullpen spot with the Red Sox. He’s actually got a fairly good shot based on the competition he’s up against. Craig Breslow will definitely make the team, because he’s the only lefty on the team with a major league deal, but he was extremely ineffective in 2014, so he may not last long. The guys he’ll be battling for the second lefty spot in the pen right out of camp will be Tommy Layne and Drake Britton. Layne excelled when he came up to replace the traded Andrew Miller posting a 0.95 ERA in 30 appearances while Britton hasn’t seen regular playing time in the majors, he has had success when there including 7 scoreless innings last year.
It’s not the toughest competition in the world, but the two guys he facing have a greater familiarity with the club and are already on the 40 man roster, so that puts him behind a little. Overall it’ll likely just be who performs in camp. If Eveland can do that he’ll be shipped up to Boston, if not he’ll sit around and wait in Pawtucket.
