Marlins sign Don Kelly to Minor League Deal
The Miami Marlins have signed utility-man Don Kelly to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training. The former 8th rounder by the Tigers enjoyed the better part of six seasons in Detroit, where he was a fan favorite due to his ability to play multiple positions.
It’s rare to see a 6 foot 4 inch player who has experience at first, third, and all three outfield spots. Kelly never had any great statistical years with the Tigers, totaling 23 home runs, 95 RBIS, and a .637 OPS. However, having never played a full season as a starter makes it difficult to judge him based on his numbers.

He did have a knack for making big plays in big games. He hit a first inning homer in Game 1 of the 2011 ALDS; also scoring the tying and knocking in the winning run in Game 2 of the 2012 ALDS.
It’s hard to imagine Kelly having much of an impact for the 2015 Marlins. It seems like he would be a better fit on a contending ball club. At the very least, he provides a veteran presence to go along with positional versatility.
