An Inside Look at the MiLB Grind with Allan Dykstra

Allan Dykstra recently completed his fourth straight strong season in the Mets organization, and on Wednesday I was fortunate enough to interview the 2013 Mets Minor League Co-Player of the Year.

While he never received an opportunity to contribute in New York, Dykstra recently signed with the Tampa Bay Rays and has a chance to earn a roster spot right out of Spring Training if all breaks right.

Quinn B: When the Rays signed you in November, did they say that you had a chance to earn a roster spot sometime during the 2015 season?

Allan Dykstra: They told me they like me and I’d have a chance, but there are no promises.

Quinn B: You finished up a fourth straight strong season in 2014. Were you disappointed that you did not receive a call-up?

Allan Dykstra: Everyone wants to get called up. That’s always the goal. But it’s out of my control all I can do is keep playing.

Quinn B: What part of your game are you currently working on most?

Allan Dykstra: I’m always working on hitting and making my swing consistent.

Quinn B: Your game seems to profile best in the national league; why did you choose to sign with the Rays as opposed to other teams?

Allan Dykstra: I thought they provided me with the best opportunity to make the big leagues, if I continued to play well.

Quinn B: What would you say is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned so far in your professional career?

Allan Dykstra: Control what you can control.

Quinn B: If you weren’t playing baseball, what do you think you’d be doing with your life right now?

Allan Dykstra: I studied business at Wake Forest, but I would like to think I would stay in baseball. Maybe as an agent even after I’m done playing.

Quinn B: Every year, you post incredible walk rates but also poor strikeout rates; what are you doing this offseason to better use your solid eye?

Allan Dykstra: I am currently trying to refine my approach to really attack the pitches I hit well.

Quinn B: What is your best attribute that can’t be interpreted from the box score or stat line?

Allan Dykstra: I like to have fun playing this game. Being a good person and teammate goes a long way over the course of a season.

Quinn B: Lastly, can you describe what is was like to be a free agent?

Allan Dykstra: Stressful in a good way, like a puzzle. You evaluate the pieces that are presented to you and try to pick the one that best fits the next year of your career and life.
