A few small transactions occurred yesterday that dealt with some minor leaguers and young players moving teams. Carter Capps was sent from the Mariners to the Marlins for Logan Morrison while Washington’s minor leaguer of the year, Billy Burns was sent to Oakland for Jerry Blevins. Keep an eye on Grading on the Curve today for a “Prospects on the Move” article on Burns.
In some other news, the Toronto Blue Jays released pitcher Thad Weber who had an excellent season mostly in Triple-A Buffalo so that he could sign a contract with NC Dinos in South Korea. This puts the Blue Jays at 39 players on their 40-man roster which will allow them to participate in the Rule 5 Draft (major league portion).
In more Rule 5 Draft news, the Padres sent 26 year old right-handed reliever Anthony Bass to Houston in what is being rumored to be a trade of draft positions today. If this is the case, then San Diego jumps to the first pick while Houston will go down to number 10.
A player to be named later in the Yankees deal that sent catcher Chris Stewart to the Yankees is 22-year-old righty Kyle Haynes, a 20th round pick from the 2012 draft who has done very well as a swing-man up to Class-A ball so far.
Stay tuned! We’ll be live blogging the Rule 5 Draft starting at 9 AM ET!
Shuster wasn’t the only Rule 5 draftee to get sent somewhere else. The Toronto Blue Jays sent lefty Brian Moran to the LA Angels for international free agent signing bonus cap space and the Mets traded righty Seth Rosin to the Dodgers for cash.
1st pick in the Rule 5 Draft, Patrick Shuster was sent to the Padres to complete the Anthony Bass deal (see above).
