Fighting for a spot in Saturday’s Championship game, the Mesa Solar Sox narrowly beat out the Glendale Desert Dogs 3-2 on Wednesday. Mesa divided the pitching load fairly evenly over six pitchers, with only Richie Mirowski and Mike Morin giving up single runs each.  Matt Skole had the only two-hit game for the Solar Sox while Steven Souza Jr. hit the game’s only home run, driving in two runs.

For Glendale, Minnesota’s Alex Meyer allowed two runs in three innings (including Souza’s home run) while Yimi Garcia was charged with an unearned run in his two innings of work. Kevin Vance would have pitched two perfect innings were it not for Corey Seager’s throwing error in the sixth. The batters scattered nine hits including three from Miami’s Brent Keys (including a double) and two each from Minnesota’s Eddie Rosario (including a triple and a stolen base) and Cincinnati’s Travis Mattair (including a double).

With a spot in the championship game sewn up, the Surprise Saguaros dropped a close one 7-6 to the last-place Peoria Javelinas. Surprise starter Miguel Pena struggled, surrendering three home runs in his four innings of work to total six runs on eight hits and one walk. The bullpen was strong, surrendering just two hits and one walk to total just one unearned run over the final five innings. Boston’s Mookie Betts and Derrik Gibson both had strong games with Betts going three for four with a walk and an RBI and Gibson going two for four with a double and a home run. Baltimore catcher Michael Ohlman hit a three run home run in a losing cause.

Peoria starter Jason Adam had a very good start, just giving up two hits in four innings while striking out three. Four Surprise runs came off of Alex Sogard who didn’t record an out while giving up a home run and three walks (one run was unearned). Kyle Simon and Dominic Leone each gave up a run but hung on for the win. Big blasts for Peoria came from Orlando Calixte, Japhet Amador and Stefen Romero (who put on a show in the Fall Stars game). Amador, Romero and Cory Spangenberg each had two hits for the Javelinas.

The Salt River Rafters cling to their playoff chances after a comeback win to beat the Scottsdale Scorpions 8-5. Scoring three runs in the ninth, the Rafters went on top by getting an RBI double from Jake Lamb, an RBI single from Stephen Piscotty and a third run due to an error by catcher Peter O’Brien. Piscotty had a huge game for Salt River, going four for five with two RBI while Cristhian Adames drove in a pair and added a double to spark the ninth-inning rally. While starting pitcher Bo Schultz got into trouble, giving up four runs on seven hits in three and two-thirds innings, the back end of the bullpen was outstanding including a pair of shutout innings from Marcus Stroman who was credited with the win. Overall, the pitching staff was extremely strong, striking out ten without walking anyone.

For Scottsdale, starter Aaron Northcraft was solid, surrendering three runs (only two were earned) in four innings with three hits and two walks against and striking out four. Matt Benedict gave up a pair of runs in just an inning and a third while the ninth inning rally came off of Mets pitcher Cody Satterwhite. Three hitters contributed eight of the Scorpions’ 13 hits while every player aside from Elmer Reyer had at least one. The Yankees’ Mason Williams and Addison Maruszak each had three hits while the Giants’ Andrew Susac had a pair of singles.
