Game 1

The Mesa Solar Sox pasted the Peoria Javelinas 8-1 on Tuesday. Mesa sent Detroit’s Blaine Hardy to the mound and he impressed, throwing four scoreless innings, giving up just four hits and not walking anyone with three strikeouts. Five other pitchers went to the mound and threw an inning each. Cam Bedrosian and R.J. Alvarez each struck out two in perfect innings. With only ten hits for the Solar Sox, C.J. Cron stood out, hitting his fifth home run of the AFL to go with a single and two runs driven in. The A’s Max Muncy also had two hits.

For Peoria, starter Brandon Maurer from the Mariners’ organization didn’t get far, giving up four runs on five hits and four walks in just two innings. Mike Nesseth gave up a run in two innings while Noel Arguelles gave up two runs in two innings. The batters only managed to get four hits although three were doubles by Orlando Calixte, Tommy Medica and Delino DeShields. Cameron Perkins may have gone oh for four with two strikeouts but he cut down two potential runs at the plate with a pair of outfield assists.

The Surprise Saguaros put another game in the win column with a 9-7 win over the Scottsdale Scorpions on Tuesday. Taylor Jungmann got the start for Surprise and couldn’t get any outs in the third inning, giving up four runs on two hits and four walks. Keith Couch gave up another two runs in his inning on four hits but the bullpen shored up after that with two scoreless innings each from Lisalverto Bonilla and Branden Kline. The bats came out for the Saguaros with Travis Shaw (Boson) and Jorge Alfaro (Texas) each having three hits including a double. Both scored two runs and Shaw drove in a pair. Mitch Haniger had another two-hit game, scoring twice and driving in another while Joe Wendle had two hits including a double and a walk and scored twice. The big blast of the game came from Texas prospect Ryan Rua who hit his fourth home run for the AFL, a grand slam, despite his .183 batting average.

For Scottsdale, starter Phil Irwin also got knocked around, surrendering five runs in four innings while Tyler Waldron who came in for the fifth inning couldn’t complete it, giving up another four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk. James Pazos pitched two scoreless innings while Derek Law struck out a pair in his perfect inning. The batters managed to put twelve hits on the board including three (and a walk) from Kyle Kubitza. Cory Vaughn, Robby Hefflinger and Angel Villalona all had two hits with Vaughn and Hefflinger scoring twice and Villalona driving in two. Addison Maruszak went oh for two but scored twice after walking three times.

The Salt River Rafters keep winning, this time defeating the Glendale Desert Dogs 7-2 at home. Drew Hutchison recovered from his disastrous last start, getting the win by going four innings with just one run allowed on four hits and three walk with four strikeouts. Cole White followed with two scoreless innings while giving up just one hit and striking out two. A trio of Toronto Blue Jays prospects fueled the offense combining for five hits, five runs, three RBI and a walk. Kenny Wilson had a triple and a home run while Andy Burns scored twice with a double and a walk. Catcher Derrick Chung completed the three-way cycle with a pair of singles to bring his batting average for the AFL up to .390.

For Glendale, starter Michael Lorenzen got stung, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks in three innings while Jamie Walczak surrendered the other three in just one inning. The offense had six hits including an RBI double by Cincinnati’s Travis Mattair and two hits from Brian Cavazos-Galvez.
