Game 1

The Mesa Solar Sox got some outstanding pitching in shutting out the Peoria Javelinas 4-0 on Monday. The Cubs’ Dallas Beeler threw five excellent innings, giving up just five hits and striking out two. Detroit’s Corey Knebel struck out two in his inning among four scoreless innings from the bullpen. Oakland’s Addison Russell and Chicago’s Albert Almora each had three hits including a double while C.J. Cron (Angels) and Kris Bryant (Cubs) each had two hits with Bryant having an outstanding game that included two doubles and two walks.

Peoria’s Johnny Barbato was lucky to give up just two runs on seven hits and a walk over four innings while only Dennis O’Grady and Ken Giles escaped from the game without allowing a run. Austin Hedges had two of the team’s five hits including a double and he also picked off Addison Russell at first base.

The Surprise Saguaros clinched a spot in Saturday’s AFL Championship with an 8-2 drubbing of the Scottsdale Scorpions. Led by Cleveland’s Tyler Naquin and Boston’s Garin Cecchini, the club steamrolled its opposition on Monday. Naquin went three for four with a triple and a walk while Cecchini was on base five times with three singles and two walks. Milwaukee’s Mitch Haniger had the biggest blow with a grand slam in the third inning while Texas’s Brett Nicholas went two for three with a double and a walk. Starter Will Lamb gave up two runs on three hits but struggled with his control, walking four batters. He was followed by Nick McBride, Tim Berry, Kevin Shackelford and Jason Gurka who combined for five scoreless innings.

For Scottsdale, starter Hansel Robles got tagged by Haniger’s big blast, giving up four runs in three innings of work. Shae Simmons had the best outing, giving up no hits and only walking two in two innings of work. The Scorpions only had five hits on the day including doubles by Mason Williams (who also walked twice) and Kyle Kubitza.

The Salt River Rafters came up with another victory, defeating the Glendale Desert Dogs 8-1. The Rafters set a great tone with Kenny Wilson (Blue Jays) leading off the game with a home run and getting another hit to go two for five. Five other players had a pair of hits including Stephen Piscotty and Kyle Parker who each hit home runs and Jake Lamb, Jacob Wilson and Cristhian Adames also had two hits each. Cardinals’ farmhand Sam Gaviglio gave the club five innings of one-run ball on five hits and a walk while four relievers combined for four scoreless innings despite walking six batters.

White Sox prospect Stephen McCray lost the game, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks in four innings while Edgar Olmos surrendered four runs on five hits in just one inning of work. Seven different players had hits for the Desert Dogs with another White Sox prospect, Jared Mitchell, going deep and adding a walk while Brandon Jacobs went one for two with a double and two walks.
