Despite each team getting four hits in the game, the Scottsdale Scorpions made them count and scored four runs and shut out the Peoria Javelinas 4-0 on Tuesday. Scottsdale starter Hansel Robles threw three scoreless innings, striking out four and giving up just two hits and one walk while six relievers combined to threw an inning each the rest of the way. Derek Law and Juan Jaime each pitched to the minimum three batters and struck out two. The four hits for Scottsdale were big with Mason Williams and Alen Hanson each driving in a run while Cory Vaughn had a single and two walks.
For Peoria, Johnny Barbato had a strong outing, going three innings and giving up just a hit and walk with one strikeout while Noel Aguelles took the loss, walking five batters over two-thirds of an inning and getting charged with four runs. Ken Giles followed Arguelles but allowed two of his three inherited runners to score despite striking out three in one and a third innings. Catcher Austin Hedges had a good game with the bat, going two for four with a double but runners stole two bases off of him without getting caught.

The Surprise Saguaros took advantage of a couple of Glendale Desert Dogs errors to take a 4-2 win on Tuesday. Led by home runs by Travis Shaw and Ryan Rua, Surprise had 11 hits to overcome Glendale. Jason Rogers went three for four while Shaw, Tyler Naquin and Adam Weisenburger had two hits each. Surprise starter Will Lamb got hit around a bit, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk in three and two-thirds innings while striking out two. The Bullpen was very strong with five relievers combining to keep Glendale off the board including Keone Kela who hit triple digits on the radar gun on at least three occasions.
For Glendale, starter Stephen McCray also gave up two runs on six hits but walked two and struck out two in three and a third innings. Trevor May gave up a run to earn the loss but the run was unearned and he struck out three in just an inning and two-thirds. On the offense, Miami’s Brent Keys went one for four with a home run and a walk and Cincinnati’s Yorman Rodriguez had a pair of singles, a walk and an RBI.

MLB Baseball used this televised game as the beginning of their pilot project, exploring the use of instant replay on close calls. The technology was used three times and all three times, the umpires were vindicated in a very brief timeframe. In a wild third inning that had the Mesa Solar Sox making three errors, the Salt River Rafters scored seven unearned runs and eventually cruised to an 8-0 victory. The Solar Sox made things easier for the Rafters by committing five errors in total but also made things difficult for themselves, only getting four hits off of Rafters pitching. Mesa starter Dallas Beeler gave up four hits and two walks over two and two-thirds innings but was charged with the seven unearned runs before Kenny Faulk came into the game to shut things down. Things were quiet until the eighth when the Rafters scored a run on two hits and a walk off of Richie Mirowski. The Solar Sox’s offense was pretty dead, getting only four singles and taking one walk over the course of the entire game.
Salt River starter Sam Gaviglio of the St. Louis Cardinals went five scoreless innings and gave up just two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Henry Garcia, Tyler Matzek, Anthony Ferrara and Matt Stites each provided an inning of scoreless relief. The club spanked eight hits including two doubles by Jacob Wilson and a pair of singles by Stephen Piscotty and Andy Burns.
