The Surprise Saguaros broke out in the late innings, scoring seven runs over the final three to take a 9-6 victory over the Glendale Desert Dogs. Surprise starter Will Roberts of the Cleveland Indians organization was solid, throwing four and a third innings of two-run ball, striking out four while Noe Ramirez from the Red Sox got lit up for two runs in his inning and two thirds. Matt West of the Rangers organization earned the win while David Goforth (Milwaukee) picked up his fourth save of the season, each throwing a scoreless inning. Tyler Naquin, also from Cleveland, led the way on offense with a three-for-five game in which he scored twice and drove in two runs. Mitch Haniger drove in three runs on a big home run off Edgar Olmos in the eighth and added a double while Boston’s Garin Cecchini hit a single and a double and drove in a pair.

Glendale starter Andrew Heaney from the Marlins was better than Roberts, giving up just two runs on only three hits in five innings of work but the damage came off of Olmos who surrendered five runs (four were earned) in just one inning of work. It just wasn’t Olmos’s night as he contributed to his own problems by making two errors in his inning. Cincinnati’s Yorman Rodriguez, fresh off the Fall Stars game, hit two home runs and drove in four for Glendale. Colin Moran and Jared Mitchell each had three hits and Moran scored twice. Chris O’Brien had two hits (a single and a double) of his own.

In a game shortened by torrential downpours (in Arizona?), the Mesa Solar Sox held on to beat the Salt River Rafters 5-4. The Solar Sox got to the Rafters early, scoring four runs of starter Grayson Garvin in four and a third innings, while getting the fifth run off of reliever Kraig Sitton. For Mesa, their starter, Matt Purke of the Washington Nationals, went four and gave up three runs of his own. The final three pitchers for Mesa, Jeff Urlaub, Seth Frankoff and Ryan Dull held the Rafters off the scoreboard to secure the win.

Washington’s Brian Goodwin led the way for Mesa, going two for four with a two-run home as part of his three-RBI game. Jorge Soler also drove in a pair with a double. For the Rafters, the offense was really provided by Colorado’s Kyle Parker who went three for four with a double, a run and an RBI.
