Game 1

The Mesa Solar Sox brought their “A-Game” on Wednesday, shutting out the Scottsdale Scorpions 7-0. The offense was led by Matt Skole who hit a home run, drove in two runs and drew a walk. Taylor Lindsey of the Angels also had a pair of RBI coming on a pair of hits while Brian Goodwin, Tyler Collins and Jett Bandy each had two hits. Cubs prospect Dallas Beeler threw the first four shutout innings, giving up just two hits and striking out one. Richie Mirowski threw two more innings before Kenny Faulk, Seth Frankoff and Mike Morin each took an inning to finish the game.

Scottsdale starter Phil Irwin was light up for three runs on three hits and three walks in four innings while Tyler Wladron relieved him and coughed up another two runs in his inning. Cody Hall was touched up for another two runs but they were unearned. The club only had five hits as a team but Jarrett Parker drew a pair of walks to go with a single.

The Peoria Javelinas had a big four-run third inning to give themselves the lead and never looked back, beating the Glendale Desert Dogs 7-5. Stefen Romero had the big hit for the Javs with a three-run home run in the third inning. He added a double and an RBI on the way to a four-RBI night. Chris Taylor also hit a home run and Nolan Fontana had a two-hit night, scoring twice and adding two walks. Brandon Maurer gave up three runs in his four innings but also struck out six batters while Adys Portillo gave up the other two runs (only one was earned) over two innings. Jonas Dufek and Ken Giles held down the fort for the last three innings to complete the victory.

For Glendale, it was Stephen McCray who gave up both home runs on the way to five runs (although only one was earned) over three innings. The batters only managed to get six hits on the night including a two-run single from Miami’s Colin Moran and a triple from Jared Mitchell (who also struck out three times).

The Suprise Saguaros staged an epic comeback, shredding the Salt River Rafters’ bullpen for all twelve runs after being down 6-0 for a huge 12-6 win. While starter Sam Gaviglio was strong for Salt River, going five shutout innings and giving up just two hits and two walks with six strikeouts, the breakdown started in the sixth with three unearned runs scoring against Mike Montgomery, two earned runs against Anthony Ferrara, three earnies against Henry Garcia and four runs (all earned) against Jake Barrett. The Blue Jays’ Andy Burns played left field for the first time in his pro career and went three for three with two doubles, a walk, a stolen base and two RBI. Colorado’s Kyle Parker went two for five with a pair of doubles as well.

While poor control got Surprise starter Will Lamb into trouble, the bullpen picked him up to give the batters a chance to win the game. Lamb only got through two and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks. The best night was Branden Kline who went two shutout innings and struck out four batters. The hitters launched three home runs on the night, one from Tyler Naquin (who also scored three, drove in two and threw Andy Burns out at second base from center field), one from Travis Shaw who went three for five with two runs scored and four RBI and a two-run shot from Ryan Rua.
