Game 1

The visiting Glendale Desert Dogs shut out the Peoria Javelinas for the second game in a row in a 6-0 final score. Stephen McCray started for Glendale and went four innings with just one hit against. Chad Rogers struck out three in his two perfect innings of work and Drew Hayes, Kevin Vance and Chris Bassitt each pitched a scoreless inning to finish off the game. Jared Mitchell had a great game, going two for three with a home run, two walks and two runs scored. Minnesota’s Max Kepler also had a pair of hits: a single and a double.
For Peoria, the news wasn’t particularly good although starter Brandon Maurer went four shutout innings giving up just two hits and a walk and striking out three. Gen Giles also pitched two shutout innings but the defense let down Jonas Dufek to allow four of his five runs surrendered to be unearned. The Peoria hitters couldn’t get anything done, getting just two hits and two walks over the course of teh game.

Home team Mesa Solar Sox got to the Scottsdale Scorpions early and took a 7-4 victory on Thursday. Scottsdale starter Phil Irwin only lasted two and a third innings and was torched for six runs on eight hits and three walks and Zack Thornton gave up the final run in the fourth inning. The rest of the bullpen pulled it through with Mets farmhand Jeurys Familia striking out three in his two scoreless innings. Alen Hanson had the best game with the bat, hitting a single and a home run, scoring twice and driving in two. Hitting right behind him in the batting order, Braves Tommy La Stella hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. Alex Dickerson of the Pirates had a single and a double.
For Mesa, C.J. Cron from the Angels’ organization wins the big bat award for a three-hit game that included his third home run of the fall season. Cubs prospect Jorge Soler also had three hits and drove in two runs of his own. Brian Goodwin also had a pair of hits. Starter Dallas Beeler earned his second win with a four-inning, two run performance. Matt Loosen gave up another run (La Stella’s solo home run) but struck out three in his two innings.

In a wild shootout, the Salt River Rafters hung on to win it 10-9 over the Surprise Saguaros. The Saguaros’ defensive struggles and lack of control from their pitchers ended up being the difference maker. Surprise starter Will Lamb walked five batters in his four innings and ended up giving up the first three runs of the game. Branden Kline followed and gave up six runs of his own (although only four were earned) in just two-thirds of an inning. Pete Ruiz relieved Kline and after giving up a single to allow one more run to score, he struck out the next four batters he faced. The lack of pitching and defense wasted a nine-run, 16-hit performance from the offense that included a single, double and home run (with four RBI) from Baltimore prospect Henry Urrutia, a three-hit game from Brett Nicholas, two-hit games from Tyler Naquin, Jason Rogers, Garin Cecchini and Dariel Alvarez and a home run from Jonathan Schoop (Jason Rogers also hit a home run).
Not only did the Salt River Rafters take advantage of the walks they were handed, but they got some great clutch hitting and fantastic base running. The Rafters stole five bases including two by Blue Jays prospect Kenny Wilson. Jake Lamb, Cristhian Adames and Derrick Chung each had a pair of hits while Tim Wheeler and Andy Burns each drove in a pair. Starter Sam Gaviglio gave up six of the runs in his four and two-thirds innings on six hits and three walks while only Jake Barrett managed to emerge from the game with his ERA unscathed.
