In Saturday’s first game of the Arizona Fall League, the Scottsdale Scorpions beat the Peoria Javelinas 12-7. Neither starter emerged unscathed with Scottsdale pitcher Vidal Nuno getting tagged for four runs on four hits in four innings while James Pazos was charged with the other three runs (all unearned) over two-thirds of an inning. Eight pitchers combined to pitch the game for Peoria with Kyle Hunter surrendering the first three runs, Adys Portillo giving up another and Ken Giles getting lit up for six runs (without retiring a batter).

On the hitting side of the ledger, the top three batters for Scottsdale combined for nine hits with Alen Hanson having three singles, Elmer Reyes going four for six with two doubles and Cory Vaughn going two for four with a triple. Robby Hefflinger continued his hot hitting by driving in three runs for the Scorpions. Peoria second baseman Cory Spangenberg led the way on offense with a four-for-five game that included a double while catcher Austin Hedges went two-for three with two walks and three RBI. Jonathan Meyer also had a pair of hits.

The Surprise pitching staff joined together to throw a three-hit shutout at the Glendale Desert Dogs in a 7-0 win on Saturday. Starter Tim Berry gave up all three hits for the Saguaros over his four innings. Noe Ramirez, Shawn Armstrong, Kevin Shackelford and Tyler Cravy combined for hitless innings (but walking five) the rest of the way. Surprise got their runs on only six hits but also took 11 walks. Mitch Haniger led the way with a home run, two walks, two runs scored and three RBI while Adam Weisenburger drove in a pair of runs. Tyler Naquin was on base three times with a hit and two walks while Derrik Gibson walked three times and catcher Michael Ohlman walked twice.

By allowing eleven walks, it’s clear that most of the Glendale hurlers weren’t sharp. Particularly blame-worthy were starter Trevor May (three runs and three walks in two innings) and reliever Jarret Martin (three runs and four walks in one and two-thirds innings). Zack Jones, Colby Suggs and Nick Wittgren didn’t walk a man and each threw a shutout inning.

The Salt River Rafter defeated the powerhouse Mesa Solar Sox by an 8-2 score built on some solid hitting and a great start. Blue Jays prospect Drew Hutchison drew on his major league experience and pitched four no-hit innings, walking just one and striking out five. Kraig Sitton, from the Colorado organization, followed with two shutout innings of his own, picking up another four strikeouts. Merrill Kelly gave up the two runs while Jake Barrett and Cole White each threw a scoreless inning to finish off the game. Catcher Derrick Chung shone for the Rafters with a single and a double while Ryan Brett had a single and a triple and James Ramsey hit two singles, stole a base and scored twice.

For Mesa, starter Michael Roth was just as effective as Hutchison was with four shutout innings while the pitching staff held the Rafters at bay until the ninth inning. R.J. Alvarez ended up allowing seven runs (four were earned) without retiring a batter in the top of the ninth, allowing Salt River to come from behind to win. Only Brian Goodwin, Jorge Soler and Jett Bandy had hits for the Solar Sox while Taylor Lindsey and Steven Souza each drew a pair of walks.
