Game 1

In another slugfest, the Surprise Saguaros scored two runs in the ninth inning to beat the Mesa Solar Sox 11-9 on Friday. Racking up 17 hits, Surprise got outstanding games from Tyler Naquin (3 for 5), Garin Cecchini (3 for 6 with a double), Henry Urrutia (3 for 4, 2 doubles), Jorge Alfaro (3 for 5) and Joe Wendle (3 for 4, one double). The Saguaros also got a home run and four RBI from Travis Shaw. For Mesa, Kris Bryant hit two home runs and drove in four as part of a 3 for 5 game while Taylor Lindsey went two for five with a triple and Jorge Soler went two for five.

Game 2

The Salt River Rafters managed to hold off the Peoria Javelinas in the late innings despite a sloppily played game in which they made four errors and won by a score of 5-3. The Rafters got a very strong start from Sam Gaviglio who gave up one run on four hits with four strikeouts in four innings. Marcus Stroman gave up a hit but struck out the side in his inning but John Stilson made it interesting in the ninth by giving up two runs (one earned). Three Rafters contributed with two hits apiece, Andy Burns (single and a double), Stephen Piscotty (single and a triple) and Jacob Wilson (two singles and two RBI) while Tim Wheeler also drove in two runs. Piscotty stole his fifth base of the season while Burns, playing out of position at first base, made his third error of the season.

The Javelinas got a solid start out of Brandon Maurer who gave up a pair of runs in his four innings but struck out five. Chris Taylor went three for five with a stolen base while Japhet Amador and Cameron Rupp each had a pair of singles.

Game 3

In the tenth innings, the Scottsdale Scorpions scored their second run of the game and defeated the Glendale Desert Dogs 2-1 in a walkoff victory. Scottsdale got an excellent start from Phil Irwin who gave up just one hit and struck out three in his three innings. Brett Gerritse matched Irwin’s strikeout numbers in only two scoreless innings while Derek Law picked up the win with two scoreless innings to finish the game. Only Braves prospect Robby Hefflinger had a multi-hit game for Scottsdale which included a solo home run in the second inning. Alex Dickerson picked up the game winning RBI with a single in the tenth.

For Glendale, Alex Meyer’s start was solid, going three innings and giving up just one run (Hefflinger’s dinger) while Charlie Leesman, Yimi Garcia, Edgar Olmos and Jamie Walczak combined to get the club to the ninth inning without further damage. Mike Thomas pitched a scoreless ninth but gave up the game winner in the tenth. Catcher Tucker Barnhart had a single, a double and team’s only RBI while Brent Keys and Eddie Rosario each had a pair of singles.
