Hitting was at a premium as the Mesa Solar Sox needed only four hits to beat the Peoria Javelinas 3-1 on Wednesday. Mesa’s pitching was outstanding, scattering eight hits but walking only one while registering nine strikeouts. Tommy Collier gave up four of those hits (and the only run) over his three innings. Jeff Urlaub picked up the win with two scoreless innings. Despite getting only four hits all game, the Solar Sox batters took advantage of some Peoria wildness, taking seven walks. The big blows came from Steven Souza who went one for three with a walk and drove in two runs and Max Muncy hit a sacrifice fly to score the third run.

Peoria squandered a good start by Matt Heidenreich who, despite walking three in his three innings of work, gave up only one hit and didn’t allow a run. Malcom Culver took the loss by giving up all three runs over his two innings of work. Chris Taylor and Japhet Amador each had a single and a double while Taylor added a stolen base and Amador drove in Taylor in the first inning to score Peoria’s only run.
