Game 1

The Mesa Solar Sox exploded for 13 runs on 16 hits in defeating the Glendale Desert Dogs 13-3 on Wednesday. 2013 second-round draft pick Kris Bryant went two for three with a three run home run and he wasn’t the only player to go deep. His organization-mate, Albert Almora (playing center field) went four for five with a double, a home run, three runs scored and three RBI. Another Cubs farmhand, Wes Darvill, who only hit three home runs all season long, went deep in his only at bat, driving in two. Detroit prospects Devon Travis and Dixon Machado each had two hits for Mesa. Nationals prospect Sammy Solis had an excellent start for Mesa with three and two-thirds innings of shutout ball. On the other side, starter Michael Lorenzen took the brunt of the damage for Glendale, giving up seven runs in just two innings while Jamie Walczak gave up four in an inning and a third. Chad Rogers pitched a strong two innings, giving up just one hit. Travis Mattair and Jared Mitchell each had a pair of hits that included a home run while Brandon Jacobs went deep with a pinch-hit home run.

Houston prospect Matt Heidenreich had a very good start for Peoria, throwing three scoreless innings and giving up just two walks while striking out two. The other four pitchers that Peoria sent out essentially served as cannon fodder for the Saguaros hitters. For Peoria, Cameron Rupp and Jorge Bonifacio had a pair of hits each.

Game 3

The Salt River Rafters exploded for 12 runs in defeating the Scottsdale Scorpions 12-2. Toronto’s sleeper prospect, third baseman Andy Burns, led the way with a three-hit game while his New Hampshire teammate Kenny Wilson went two for six with three RBI, a walk and a stolen base. Richie Shaffer and James Ramsey also had a pair of hits each with Ramsey, a St. Louis prospect, hit a home run and drove in three. On the mound, Grayson Garvin, a 23 year old from the Tampa Bay system who missed much of the season due to injury, was outstanding, going five shutout innings and gave up just a hit and a walk while striking out five. Jake Barrett, despite giving up a hit in his inning, struck out the side. Scottsdale’s bats were definitely cooled off by the Salt River pitchers but Alex Dickerson had a single and a double while Peter O’Brien went one for four with a two-run home run. Aaron Northcraft started the game strong for Scottsdale by striking out the side in the first inning but he was touched up for two runs in two and a third innings. Only Fred Lewis escaped giving up a run for the Scorpions.
