Florida State League 2013 Year in Review: Marlins’ Justin Nicolino Continues to Show Promise

Pitcher of the Year Justin Nicolino, Jupiter (MIA)

Nicolino takes the honors for top pitcher in the FSL despite spending a third of his season at Double-A Jacksonville. In his 18 starts prior to the promotion, Nicolino had a 2.23 ERA a 3.56 strikeout-to-walk ratio. regarded as a top-100 prospect heading into the season, the 6-foot-3 lefty was a second-round pick back in 2010. The Marlins acquired the 21-year-old from the Toronto Blue Jays in the Jose Reyes trade.

Player of the Year Dustin Lawley, St. Lucie (NYM)

Lawley was the top power hitter in the FSL, leading the league with 25 home runs and a .512 slugging percentage. Drafted by the Mets in the 19th round in 2011, the 24-year-old was called all the way up to Triple-A for six games at the end of the season. Lawley got most of his reps in as a left fielder, but did also play some third base. Though the power is impressive, Lawley could still use some work on his overall game at the plate. He struck out 113 times while drawing 36 walks, posting a .262 average and .313 on-base percentage.
