California League 2013 Year In Review: Athletics Prospect Addison Russell Named Top Rookie

Rookie of the Year Addison Russell, Stockton (OAK)

Russell’s impressive performance in the Cal League gave Oakland the Confidence to promote him all the way up to Triple-A for a brief stint at the end of the season. The 19-year-old shortstop hit .275/.377/.508. He was an extra base machine, hitting 17 home runs, 10 triples and 29 doubles. The A’s No. 11 pick of the 2012 Draft, Russell also stole 21 bases at an 87.5 percent success rate.

Most Valuable Player Zach Borenstein, Inland Empire (LAA)

Borenstein had some of the best numbers in the minors, leading the Cal League is most hitting categories. The left fielder hit .337 with 28 home runs and 95 RBIs. He also had an OPS over 1.000 and managed to keep his strikeouts below 90. The 23-year-old was drafted out of Eastern Illinois by the Angels in the 23rd round of the 2011 Draft.

Pitcher of the Year Dan Winkler, Modesto (COL)

Winkler, 23, was dominant over 22 starts in the Cal League, earning himself a late season promotion to Double-A. The right-hander averaged 10.5 K/9 with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.11 over 130 1/3 innings for Modesto. He also led the Cal League with a 0.93 WHIP and .184 batting average against.The Rockies took Winkler in the 20th round of the 2011 Draft, and he’s posted a 3.73 ERA and 9.4 K/9 over 64 minor league starts.
