Around the Minors: San Francisco Giants Prospect Kyle Crick Dominates In Front of GM

Kyle Crick had eight strikeouts over seven shutout innings for the San Jose Giants. San Francisco’s top prospect, Crick surrendered just three hits and didn’t walk a batter. Here’s what Crick told MiLB.com reporter Josh Jackson after the game:

"“I think that’s always the biggest goal, not walking guys. Let your stuff take care of itself and get hitters out.”"

The 6-foot-4 right-hander had a 1.57 ERA and averaged 12.5 K/9 in High-A. Giants GM Brian Sabean was in attendance to witness Crick’s strong performance up close and personal.

>Hunter Renfroe hit a triple and a home run while Colin Rea turned in seven solid innings to lift the Fort Wayne TinCaps to a 5-2 victory. Taken 13th overall by the San Diego Padres in this year’s draft, Renfroe hit .271/.308/.459 over 43 games in the minors this season. Rea struck out six while surrendering one run on three hits and a walk.

>Cory Spangenberg and Austin Hedges each had two hits as the San Antonio Missions beat the Corpus Christi Hooks 5-3. The Padres’ No. 10 pick of the 2011 Draft, Spangenberg has gotten better each month after struggling against Double-A pitching out the gate. The second baseman hit .292/.346/.407 over the season. Hedges had similar troubles with the bat after moving up from High-A, but the 21-year-old is praised for his defense behind the plate.

>Paul Blackburn tallied nine strikeouts over five innings for the Boise Hawks. The 19-year-old gave up one run on three hits and a walk. Taken by the Chicago Cubs 56th overall in the 2012 Draft, Blackburn had a 3.33 ERA and 38 strikeouts over 46 innings in Low-A during the regular season.

>Andrew Pierce threw seven shutout innings for the State College Spikes. The 22-year-old had seven strikeouts and gave up four hits and no walks. Taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the eighth round of this year’s draft, Pierce had a 2.11 ERA and 5.14 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 42 ⅔ innings at Low-A.
