Around the Minors: Arizona Diamondbacks Prospects Matt Davidson and Chris Owings End With Big Numbers

The Reno Aces got huge performances out of the left side of their infield as they closed their season with a 17-7 victory. Third baseman Matt Davidson hit his 17th home run and drove in five runs and shortstop Chris Owings went 3-for-6 with a pair of stolen bases, giving him some nice, even numbers to end with. Owings hit .330 and stole 20 bases for the Aces.

Both players appeared on Baseball America’s Top-10 list for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Davidson placing fourth while Owings was seventh. Davidson was up for a cup of coffee with the D-Backs earlier this season and was the MVP of the Futures Game.

>Juan Duran celebrated his 22nd birthday in style, smashing three home runs for Class A Bakersfield, a Cincinnati Reds affiliate. The 6-foot-7 product of the Dominican Republic ends the season with 20 home runs, and was especially dangerous against left-handed pitching this season, posting an OPS of 1.064.

>The Rochester Red Wings turned a 5-4-3 triple play in their 13-3 win that also secured a playoff birth. Third baseman Ray Olmedo got things started, as he fielded the chopper and went around the horn to end the top of the third inning.

>Marcus Stroman tallied 11 strikeouts while giving up just one run on two hits for the
New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The Toronto Blue Jays prospect served a 50-game PED suspension earlier this season, but has been dominant since his return. The former first-round pick has 129 strikeouts over 111 ⅔ innings pitched.

>Hunter Morris hit his 24th home run of the season for the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. This marks the first baseman’s third-straight 20-homerun season, as he slugged 28 last year and 20 in 2011.

>Texas Rangers prospects Teodoro Martinez and Luis Sardinas had monster games for the Frisco Rough Riders in a 14-1 blowout. Martinez hit a pair of home runs to go with eight RBIs and Sardinas had a four-hit game. Martinez, 21, has impressive power-speed numbers (15 HR, 21 SB) but needs to improve on his .283 on-base percentage. Sardinas, yet another Rangers shortstop prospect, had been struggling since being called up to Double-A.

>Cleveland Indians prospect Luis Gomez combined with two relievers to throw a no hitter for the Class A short season Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Gomez threw six innings, his longest start of the year, and struck out eight batters while issuing one walk. The 20-year-old finishes his season with a 3.40 ERA and 53 strikeouts over 39 ⅔ innings pitched between two levels.

>Oakland Athletics prospect Addison Russell has struggled in the early going of his first sting at Triple-A. The 19-year-old was 1-for-5 with four strikeouts last night, and is 3-for-13 (.077) with nine strikeouts altogether for the Sacramento River Cats.
