Since we’re now one step away from the Top-10, you’d expect this group to be very strong and they didn’t disappoint in 2012. Nine of the ten prospects below upped their stock in my book with only Mesoraco slipping. Four of the ten spent time in the majors and three of those (Mesoraco, Machado and Hutchison) exhausted their prospect eligibility in the process.
#11: Robbie Erlin – LHP – San Diego Padres
Profile Published – 12/27/2011
2012 – AZL Padres (Rk): 2.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 7 H, 2 BB and 8 SO in 8.1 IP
2012 – San Antonio (AA): 2.92 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 53 H, 14 BB and 72 SO in 52.1 IP
Best Month – May: 18.0 IP, 18 H, 5 ER, 6 BB and 25 SO with San Antonio
Worst Month – August: 27.0 IP, 22 H, 9 ER, 6 BB and 35 SO with San Antonio and the AZL Padres
Stock Up/Down – Up, based on the 60.2 innings he was on the mound. Turned in an outstanding 5.00 SO/BB and was strong in most every other statistical measure as well.
#12: Devin Mesoraco – C – Cincinnati Reds
Profile Published – 12/26/2011
2012 – Louisville (AAA): 0.167/.211/.222, 1 2B, 1 BB and 2 SO in 19 PA
2012 – Cincinnati (MLB): 0.212/.288/.352, 8 2B, 5 HR, 1 SB, 17 BB and 33 SO in 184 PA

Worst Month – August: 0.150/.186/.200 in 43 PA with Cincinnati and Louisville
Stock Up/Down – Down. Simply failed to live up to the standard he set for himself in 2010 and 2011.
#13: Manny Machado – SS – Baltimore Orioles
Profile Published – 12/25/2011
2012 – Bowie (AA): 0.266/.352/.438, 26 2B, 5 3B, 11 HR, 13 SB, 48 BB and 70 SO in 459 PA

2012 – Arizona (MLB): 6.06 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, 14 H, 13 BB and 17 SO in 16.1 IP
Best Month – April: 28.2 IP, 18 H, 4 ER, 17 BB and 37 SO with Mobile
Worst Month – July: 17.1 IP, 16 H, 11 ER, 13 BB and 18 SO with Reno and Arizona
Stock Up/Down – Up. He had a rough go of things in three out of four starts at the major league level but he was otherwise fantastic and will be just 22 on Opening Day.
#15: Gerrit Cole – RHP – Pittsburgh Pirates
Profile Published – 12/23/2011

Worst Month – May: 0.258/.308/.381 in 104 PA with Salem
Stock Up/Down – Up and just turned 20 last week. All signs are very positive except for the 21-1 SO-to-BB he racked up in the Eastern League to close the season.
#19: Cody Buckel – RHP – Texas Rangers
Profile Published – 12/19/2011

Stock Up/Down – Up. He’s 20-years old and already in Double-A with a 2.96 SO/BB. What’s not to like?
#20: Drew Hutchison – RHP – Toronto Blue Jays
Profile Published – 12/18/2011
2012 – New Hampshire (AA): 2.16 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 16 H, 3 BB and 12 SO in 16.2 IP
2012 – Toronto (MLB): 4.60 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 59 H, 20 BB and 49 SO in 58.2 IP
Best Month – June: 14.0 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 3 BB and 13 SO with Toronto
Worst Month – May: 34.1 IP, 33 H, 17 ER, 13 BB and 30 SO with Toronto
Stock Up/Down – Up. It was a bit surprising that he was in Toronto’s rotation after just three April starts in the Eastern League, but Hutchison handled himself well. A UCL injury in June eventually led to Tommy John surgery in August and he will out for the bulk of (if not the entirety) of 2013.
