Standout Sprouts: August 31st, 2012 - Russ Canzler and Noah Syndergaard

Standout Sprouts is a recap of what I consider to be the top performances in the minors from the previous day. These are broken out into two groups: hitters and pitchers and players are listed within those groups by the organization to which they belong. At least one player will be included from each league in AAA on down through the Pioneer and Appalachian. Where possible I will select both a hitter and pitcher for each league, but at times will only pick one or the other. From the 14-28 players that make this list each day, I will pick an overall hitter and pitcher of the day and (time permitting) will write a few paragraphs on them.

Hitter of the Day:

CLE – 1B Russ Canzler, Columbus (AAA): 4-5, 2 2B, HR, 6 RBI, 3 R

This marks Canzler’s 6th time making our daily feature, but it’s his first time he’s walked away with Hitter of the Day honors. Overall the 26-year old is hitting 0.265/.328/.487 with 36 2B and 22 HR in 130 games this season. That stat line pales in comparison to the 0.314/.401/.530 that he posted last season with the Durham Bulls, but Canzler has picked it up of late and is 13-41 (0.317) with 4 2B and 2 HR in his last 10 games.

He made his major league debut with the Rays last year and went 1-3 in limited action.

Pitcher of the Day:

TOR – RHP Noah Syndergaard, Lansing (A): 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 SO

It seems like a Blue Jays pitching prospect is in the running for Pitcher of the Day on a regular basis. In fact just yesterday Taylor Cole took the honors, giving Toronto back-to-back award winners.

Syndergaard has been fantastic this season with a 2.60 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 122-31 SO-to-BB in 103.2 innings pitched. Augmenting his stat line is the fact that he just turned 20 three days ago and is more than two years younger than the median age of his Midwest League peers. He’s without question a candidate to break into the S2S 2013 Top-100 Prospect List that will be kicking off in a month or so.
