Prospect Pulse: August 12th, 2012 - Chris Heston and Ben Orloff

The Prospect Pulse is a recap of some of the top performances in the minors from the previous day. Prospects are sorted by the league in which they play with their parent club listed in parentheses. In each of the 14 leagues this series follows I will select what I feel is the single best performance and may mix in a few “honorable” mentions as well. Then at the end of each days’ recap I will pick a hitter and pitcher of the day from among the 14+ players covered.

Eastern League (AA)

RHP – Chris Heston, Richmond (San Francisco): 7.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 11 SO

Among Squirrel starters Mike Kickham gets a great deal of attention, and deservedly so, but Heston has been even better. In 21 starts on the season he has a 2.20 ERA and 114-30 SO-to-BB in 123.2 innings pitched. His start on Sunday, however, was his best of the bunch and made him an easy selection for pitcher of the day honors.

RF – Zoilo Almonte, Trenton (NY Yankees): 2-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, R

Southern League (AA)

3B – Matt Davidson, Mobile (Arizona): 3-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, R

Texas League (AA)

RHP – Jarrett Grube, Arkansas (LA Angels): 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 9 SO

SS – Ben Orloff, Corpus Christi (Houston): 5-5, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, 3 R

The Astros 9th round pick in the 2009 draft received a promotion from the Cal League last month but his season has been relatively unspectacular at both stops. Prior to Sunday’s game he was in a 5-23 stretch. Thanks to his perfect day at the plate, however, he’s now hitting 0.357/.379/.500 in his last 10 games. Orloff’s 5-hit performance also made him an easy selection as the hitter of the day – the second Astros farmhand to receive that honor in as many days.

International League (AAA)

1B – Chris Parmelee, Rochester (Minnesota): 3-4, 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R, BB

RHP – Liam Hendriks, Rochester (Minnesota): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO

Pacific Coast League (AAA)

DH – Matt Kata, Round Rock (Texas): 4-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, R

CF – Wil Myers, Omaha (Kansas City): 5-7, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 4 R

Myers was part of the Storm Chasers attack that put up 20 runs and 33 hits on Sunday against Tuscon.
