Prospect Pulse: August 11th, 2012 - Zach Duke and Oswaldo Arcia

The Prospect Pulse is a recap of some of the top performances in the minors from the previous day. Prospects are sorted by the league in which they play with their parent club listed in parentheses. In each of the 14 leagues this series follows I will select what I feel is the single best performance and may mix in a few “honorable” mentions as well. Then at the end of each days’ recap I will pick a hitter and pitcher of the day from among the 14+ players covered.

Eastern League (AA)

DH – Oswaldo Arcia, New Britain (Minnesota): 3-3, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, R, 2 BB

It was tough to decide between Seth Mejias-Brean, Wilfredo Rodriguez and Arcia for hitter of the day honors. In the end I went with the Twins prospect due in part to the two walks and the fact he did it while facing Double-A pitchers. Arcia is hitting 0.330/.406/.553 in 49 games since he was bumped up to the Eastern League and is 13-34 with 8 walks in his last 10 games.

Southern League (AA)

RHP – Evan Anundsen, Huntsville (Milwaukee): 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO

Texas League (AA)

RHP – Josh Geer, San Antonio (San Diego): 8.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO

2B – Alex Buchholz, Frisco (Texas): 3-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, R

International League (AAA)

LHP – Zach Duke, Syracuse (Washington): 9.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO

Duke long ago lost his prospect status, but he still had by far the best start in the minors on Saturday and was an easy choice for pitcher of the day. On the season he has a tidy 3.57 ERA and 13-5 record in 23 starts with the Chiefs. However he’s allowed 157 hits – 14 of them home runs – in 143.2 innings while striking out just 4.88 per nine.

LF – Stefan Gartrell, Gwinnett (Atlanta): 2-3, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB

Pacific Coast League (AAA)

RHP – Barry Enright, Salt Lake (LA Angels): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO

CF – Leonys Martin, Round Rock (Texas): 3-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R

LF – Dave Sappelt, Iowa (Chicago Cubs): 3-5, 2 2B, 3B, RBI, 2 R
