Prospect Pulse: August 1st, 2012 – Kyle Crick and Dustin Geiger

The Prospect Pulse is a recap of some of the top performances in the minors from the previous day. Prospects are sorted by the league in which they play with their parent club listed in parentheses. In each of the 14 leagues this series follows I will select what I feel is the single best performance and may mix in a few “honorable” mentions as well. Then at the end of each days’ recap I will pick a hitter and pitcher of the day from among the 14+ players covered.

I apologize that today’s Prospect Pulse is a little later than normal. My youngest son needed to go to the doctor to confirm that he is dealing with yet another round of strep throat.

Appalachian League (Rk)

2B – Ildemaro Vargas, Johnson City (St. Louis): 4-5, 2 2B, RBI, 2 R

RHP – Yender Caramo, Burlington (Kansas City): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO

Pioneer League (Rk)

C – Michael Perez, Missoula (Arizona): 2-4, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, 2 R

1B – Wade Hinkle, Orem (LA Angels): 2-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R

New York-Penn League (A-)

C – Charlie Valerio, Mahoning Valley (Cleveland): 3-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 3 R

RHP – Vincent Velasquez, Tri-City (Houston): 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 SO

Northwest League (A-)

RF – Xavier Batista, Boise (Chicago Cubs): 3-5, 2 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R

RHP – Will Scott, Eugene (San Diego): 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO

Midwest League (A)

DH – Dustin Geiger, Peoria (Chicago Cubs): 3-5, 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 2 R

Geiger, the Cubs 24th round pick in the 2010 draft, fell just short of representing the Midwest League on the July 29th Prospect Pulse. On that day his 2-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI performance didn’t measure up to Fort Wayne’s Yeison Asencio who went 5-5 with 3 XBH. Obviously things are much different this time around as his double, pair of homers and eight RBI easily netted him Hitter of the Day honors, not just in his league but overall. While he’s had a couple of big days recently, he’s otherwise mired in a bit of a slump hitting just 0.220/.233/.585 with 1 BB  and 9 SO in his last 10 games. Here’s hoping August is better to him than July as he hit 0.206/.259/.458 in 27 games last month.

3B – Miguel Sano, Beloit (Minnesota): 2-5, 2B, HR, 5 RBI, R

South Atlantic League (A)

LHP – Alex Panteliodis, Savannah (NY Mets): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO

RHP – Kyle Crick, Augusta (San Francisco): 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO

Crick is no stranger to the Prospect Pulse having made the cut on 7/13, 6/23 and 6/7 in the last few months. Coupled with his latest performance that makes four times in his last nine starts that he’s been one of the best starters in the SAL on the days he’s taken the ball. That’s pretty heady stuff in itself and he had two other 5.0 inning shutout starts that were also outstanding in that stretch. It’s no wonder that Crick’s name came up as a “prospect of interest” in various trade discussions over the last couple weeks and it’s makes a statement that he Giants elected to hang on to their 2011 supplemental round pick. The 19-year old now has a 2.47 ERA with 97 SO in 87.1 IP and while he has walked 6.1 batters per nine, he’s offset that with an outstanding 5.5 H/9. Crick was already considered by some to be a Top-10 prospect in the Giants organization prior to this season and given what he’s done this year, it seems almost a given he will be a unanimous Top-10 guy for San Francisco – maybe even Top-5 – heading into 2013.

3B – Matthew Skole, Hagerstown (Washington): 2-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R, BB, SB

California League (A+)

2B – Taylor Lindsey, Inland Empire (LA Angels): 4-4, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB

RF – Randal Grichuk, Inland Empire (LA Angels): 3-5, 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 3 R

1B – Erik Castro, Lancaster (Houston): 2-4, 2B, HR, 5 RBI, 3 R, BB, SB

Carolina League (A+)

RHP – Dylan Bundy, Frederick (Baltimore): 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO

LHP – Mike Rayl, Carolina (Cincinnati): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO

Florida State League (A+)

CF – Slade Heathcott, Tampa (NY Yankees): 3-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, R, BB

RHP – Taylor Jungmann, Brevard County (Milwaukee): 7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO

Eastern League (AA)

LF – Robbie Widlansky, Bowie (Baltimore): 4-4, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R

1B – Rhyne Hughes, Bowie (Baltimore): 3-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 3 R

Southern League (AA)

3B – Nate Tenbrink, Jackson (Seattle): 3-5, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, R

LHP – James Paxton, Jackson (Seattle): 6.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO

Texas League (AA)

DH – Matt Rizzotti, Midland (Oakland): 3-6, 2 2B, HR, 3 RBI, R

International League (AAA)

Only Pawtucket and Lehigh Valley faced off in the International League yesterday and nary a player stood out enough to merit inclusion on the Prospect Pulse.

Pacific Coast League (AAA)

1B – Greg Rohan, Iowa (Chicago Cubs): 3-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R

2B – Eric Farris, Nashville (Milwaukee): 4-6, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R

How does Andrew Werner’s complete game 5 hit shutout not even get mentioned?

    • http://puckettspond.com/ Wally Fish

Josh, thanks for the comment and for checking things out!

Werner’s start did get mentioned in today’s (8/3) article which covered the games played on August 2nd. This article which you commented on covered the MiLB games played on August 1st.

It was a fantastic start for Werner though, no doubt.
