Prospect Pulse: July 30th, 2012 - Rainy Lara and Yazy Arbelo

The Prospect Pulse is a recap of some of the top performances in the minors from the previous day. Prospects are sorted by the league in which they play with their parent club listed in parentheses. In each of the 14 leagues this series follows I will select what I feel is the single best performance and may mix in a few “honorable” mentions as well. Then at the end of each days’ recap I will pick a hitter and pitcher of the day from among the 14+ players covered.

Lara has pitched well at each stop of his young professional career. In the Dominican Summer League in 2010 he finished with a 1.97 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 51-13 SO-to BB in 64.0 IP. In 2011 he came stateside and pitched as a reliever/closer in the Gulf Coast League. This year however he’s taking things to a new level showing significant improvement in both his SO and BB rates. In 7 NYPL starts (39.2 IP) he has a 2.72 ERA and 54-5 SO-to-BB. He wasn’t mentioned on most prospect lists this past offseason, but he’s definitely going to be on the map if he keeps this up the rest of the year.
