Prospect Pulse: July 21st, 2012 - Charlie Lowell and Michael Taylor

The Prospect Pulse is a recap of some of the top performances in the minors from the previous day. Prospects are sorted by the league in which they play with their parent club listed in parentheses. In each of the 14 leagues this series follows I will select what I feel is the single best performance and may mix in a few “honorable” mentions as well. Then at the end of each days’ recap I will pick a hitter and pitcher of the day from among the 14+ players covered.

Appalachian League (Rk)

RHP – Tucker Jensen, Bluefield (Toronto): 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO

RF – Ariel Ovando, Greeneville (Houston): 3-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R, BB

18-year old is hitting 0.327/.375/.473 in 29 games this season but his 2 home runs on Saturday were his first of 2012.

Pioneer League (Rk)

RF – Kyle Robinson, Great Falls (Chicago White Sox): 3-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB

This strong showing pushed Robinson’s average up over 0.400 on the season – 0.409 to be exact – which is a far cry from the 0.204/.273/.382 slash line he racked up in the Appy League last year.

New York-Penn League (A-)

LHP – Brian Holmes, Tri-City (Houston): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 SO

2012 13th round pick has allowed 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB and 12 SO in his last two starts (13.0 IP).

Northwest League (A-)

RHP – Shane Broyles, Tri-City (Colorado): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 B, 9 SO

Back-to-back shutouts have dropped his ERA to 1.45 and netted him a 27-6 SO-to-BB in 31.0 innings.

Midwest League (A)

RHP – Drew Granier, Burlington (Oakland): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO

2B – Daniel Mateo, Kane County (Kansas City): 2-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 R

South Atlantic League (A)

CF – Gregory Polanco, West Virginia (Pittsburgh): 4-4, 2B, 4 RBI, 2 R, 2 SB

20-year old Dominican hit 0.234 in first three seasons but has blossomed to the tune of 0.323/.381/.513 with 37 SB this year.

LHP – Charlie Lowell, Greensboro (Miami): 7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO

California League (A+)

Carolina League (A+)

CF – Michael Taylor, Potomac (Washington): 5-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 3 R

The “other” Michael Taylor is 10-14 with 8 runs in his last three games and has hit 0.395/.452/.763 in his last 10.

RHP – Nathan Karns, Potomac (Washington): 6.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO

Florida State League (A+)

SS – Edgar Duran, Clearwater (Philadelphia): 2-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 R

LHP – Jesse Biddle, Clearwater (Phildelphia): 8.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO

Phillies #2 prospect has a 3.21 ERA and 104 SO in 101.0 innings.

Eastern League (AA)

RHP – Trevor Holder, Harrisburg (Washington): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO

Holder’s first two starts in the EL resulted in 13 H and 10 ER in just 7.1 IP so it’s nice to see that the third time was the charm.

1B – Reynaldo Rodriguez, Portland (Boston): 3-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 3 R

Southern League (AA)

DH – Khris Davis, Huntsville (Milwaukee): 4-4, 2B, HR, RBI, 3 R

With a 0.349/.457/.528 in 38 Double-A games this season Davis has taken a step forward both in terms of level and production.

Texas League (AA)

RHP – Orangel Arenas, Arkansas (LA Angels): 9.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO

International League (AAA)

LHP – Charles Leesman, Charlotte (Chicago White Sox): 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO
