Prospect Pulse: July 20th, 2012 - Mauro Gomez and Jesse Hernandez

The Prospect Pulse is a recap of some of the top performances in the minors from the previous day. Prospects are sorted by the league in which they play with their parent club listed in parentheses. In each of the 14 leagues this series follows I will select what I feel is the single best performance and may mix in a few “honorable” mentions as well. Then at the end of each days’ recap I will pick a hitter and pitcher of the day from among the 14+ players covered.

Appalachian League (Rk)

1B – Mark Threlkeld, Burlington (Kansas City): 3-4, 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI, R

The Royals 2011 25th round selection, Threlkeld has scuffled this season hitting 0.235/.278/.447 and was mired in a 2-28 slump before going 3-4 in each of his last two games.

RHP – Jake Cose, Bristol (Chicago White Sox): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO

Pioneer League (Rk)

SS – Alfredo Rodriguez, Helena (Milwaukee): 3-3, 3 2B, 2 RBI, R

Plucked from the University of Maryland in the 17th round of this June’s draft, Rodriguez is hitting 0.283/.383/.394 with 12 BB and 11 SO in 27 games on the year.

New York-Penn League (A-)

RHP – Jacob Lee, Mahoning Valley (Cleveland): 5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO

After making 8 relief appearances, the Tribe game the 2012 9th round pick a chance to start and he responded with five no-hit innings. Lee now has a 2.11 ERA and 27-4 SO-to-BB in 21.1 IP as he continues to get his professional career off the ground in impressive fashion.

RHP – Aaron West, Tri-City (Houston): 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO

Northwest League (A-)

RHP – Peter Tago, Tri-City (Colorado): 8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO

Tago was a potential 1st round selection before he fell to 47th overall in the 2010 draft. He didn’t make his pro debut until last season with Asheville where his 7.07 ERA, 88 H, 72 BB and 58 SO in 90.1 IP pushed him further off the edges of the prospect map. Friday’s outing was by far the best of Tago’s seven starts this year.

1B – Roderick Shoulders, Boise (Chicago Cubs): 4-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, R

Midwest League (A)

RHP – James Allen, Dayton (Cincinnati): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO

The K-State alum has a 2.88 ERA and 29-12 SO-to-BB in his last 10 appearances, the last 4 of which has been starts.

South Atlantic League (A)

CF – Aaron Altherr, Lakewood (Philadelphia): 3-4, 2B, 3B, RBI, 2 R

California League (A+)

3B – Justin Miller, Lake Elsinore (San Diego): 3-6, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 3 R

CF – Rafael Ortega, Modesto (Colorado): 3-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, SB

Carolina League (A+)

RHP – Alex Meyer, Potomac (Washington): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO

RHP – Elisaul Pimentel, Wilmington (Kansas City): 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO

Florida State League (A+)

SS – Derek Dietrich, Charlotte (Tampa Bay): 4-5, 3B, HR, 5 RBI, 3 R

RHP – Jesse Hernandez, Dunedin (Toronto): 8.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 12 SO

Just one strike away from a no-hitter, Hernandez had to settle for a 12 SO, 1 hit gem that was by far his best start since debuting in the FSL on June 18th. While he does have a 5.97 ERA with Dunedin, he has allowed just 6 H, 2 ER in his last 18.2 IP. His impressive run is further augmented by a 19-2 SO-to-BB.

Eastern League (AA)

RF – Oswaldo Arcia, New Britain (Minnesota): 3-5, 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 R

Arcia has upped his production since his promotion and is hitting 0.330/.381/.573 in 27 Eastern League games.

RHP -Zach Clark, Bowie (Baltimore): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO

International League (AAA)

1B – Mauro Gomez, Pawtucket (Boston): 5-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, R

Gomez has now hit in his last 12 minor league games with 7 of them of the multi-hit variety. The only thing that has disrupted his onslaught on the International League has been the occasional call-up to Boston.

Pacific Coast League (AAA)

RHP – Shelby Miller, Memphis (St. Louis): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO

Friday’s start was Miller’s 2nd straight shutout and a very positive sign for the Top-10 prospect.

RHP – Matt Palmer, Tuscon (San Diego): 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO
