The Prospect Pulse is a recap of some of the top performances in the minors from the previous day. Prospects are sorted by the league in which they play with their parent club listed in parentheses. In each of the 14 leagues this series follows I will select what I feel is the single best performance and may mix in a few “honorable” mentions as well. Then at the end of each days’ recap I will pick a hitter and pitcher of the day from among the 14+ players covered.
Appalachian League (Rk)
CF – Bubba Starling, Burlington (Kansas City): 2-4, HR, RBI, R, BB, SB
Only one of the five Appy league games on the schedule came to it’s planned conclusion and Starling was the benefactor of that. None-the-less he’s only of my favorite prospects and even though he’s hitting 0.229/.386/.371 in his last 10 games, he’s 5-16 in his last 4.
Pioneer League (Rk)
1B – Michael Snyder, Orem (LA Angels): 4-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 R
In 27 games this season Snyder is raking to the tune of 0.398/.455/.722 with 20 extra-base hits. Even more impressive is his 0.512/.563/1.000 slash line with 4 2B, 1 3B and 5 HR in his last 10 games.
RHP – Matt Carasiti, Grand Junction (Colorado): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO
New York-Penn League (A-)
RHP – Gabriel Ynoa, Brooklyn (NY Mets): 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO
RHP – Clay Holmes, State College (Pittsburgh): 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO
The Pirates 2011 9th round pick has only allowed earned runs in one of his six starts to kick off his professional career. In 28.2 IP he has a 0.94 ERA, 19-11 SO-to-BB and has allowed 13 hits.
Northwest League (A-)
SS – Jorge Flores, Vancouver (Toronto): 2-4, 2B, 3B, RBI, 2 R, BB
Toronto’s 19th round pick from this year’s draft is off to a fantastic start hitting 0.338/.449/.585 in 19 games thus far.
Midwest League (A)
RF – Jabari Blash, Clinton (Seattle): 4-5, 2 2B, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, 3 R
RHP – Cameron Bedrosian (Cedar Rapids): 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO
Cameron’s 2012 roller-coaster ride continues but has still walked more (31) batters than he has struck out (26) in 13 starts.
South Atlantic League (A)
2B – Jose Garcia, Greenville (Boston): 4-6, 2B, RBI, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 SB
21-year old Dominican is hitting 0.269/.366/.372 on the season and his Thursday performance snaps a 7-36 run at the plate.
California League (A+)
1B – Ricky Oropesa, San Jose (San Francisco Giants): 4-4, 2 2B, 5 RBI, 2 R
Oropesa desperately needed a big game at the plate and even with the 4 hits yesterday he’s hitting just 0.179/.195/.282 in his last 10.
LF – Randal Grichuk, Inland Empire (LA Angels): 3-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R
LF – Brandon Jacobs, Salem (Boston): 4-5, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R
RHP – Kyle Hendricks, Myrtle Beach (Texas): 7.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO
Hendricks, an 8th round pick in the 2011 draft, is looking like a steal so far. After putting up a 2.02 ERA and 38-6 SO-to-BB in 35.1 IP last season, he’s carried the momentum forward. In 19 starts with Myrtle Beach he has a 2.71 ERA and has struck out 106 while walking just 13 in 126.0 innings.
Florida State League (A+)
CF – Kevin Pillar, Dunedin (Toronto): 4-4, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, R
Obviously aided greatly by his 4-hit game yesterday, Pillar is 7-16 in his first four games in the FSL.
Eastern League (AA)
RHP – Stolmy Pimentel, Portland (Boston): 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO
Pimentel has been scuffling along this year with a 5.00 ERA, 83 hits allowed and 54-25 SO-to-BB in 75.2 IP. However, he’s now turned in back-to-back 7.0 inning, 1 run outings with a 13-1 SO-to-BB which is certainly encouraging despite the small sample size.
Southern League (AA)
C – Kyle Skipworth, Jacksonville (Miami): 3-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB
Has now pushed his current hit streak to six and has hit four HR in the last three games, but is still hitting just 0.213/.277/.383 in 79 games on the season.
Texas League (AA)
RF – Drew Locke, Corpus Christi (Houston): 5-5, 2B, RBI, R
2B – Jonathan Galvez, San Antonio (San Diego): 4-7, 3 2B, 3 RBI, R
Galvez is hitting 0.331/.400/.473 in 43 games on the season.
SS – Gregorio Petit, Columbus (Cleveland): 4-4, 2 2B, HR, 5 RBI, 3 R, SB
27-year old Minor League vet is hitting 0.353/.389/.559 in his last 10 but just 0.248/.296/.402 in 70 games this year.
DH – Hector Luna, Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia): 4-5, 3B, HR, 2 RBI, 3 R
Pacific Coast League (AAA)
DH – Kila Ka’aihue, Sacramento (Oakland): 2-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R, BB
Kila has drawn 26 walks in 26 games with the River Cats and has his OBP up to 0.427 in 96 at bats. Unfortunately his OBP in 126 career games in the majors is just 0.305.
