2012 S2S Mid-Season All-Stars: Texas League

The Tulsa Drillers will be hosting the 2012 Texas League All-Star Game on Thursday, June 28th. The game will pit the North against the South and feature the following players as selected by the managers and broadcasters of the various teams. Here at Seedlings to Stars, however, we are naming our own All-Star teams for each of the full season leagues and given that the game is just a few days away it’s time to reveal our picks for the Texas League.

To qualify for the team, players had to spend the bulk of the first half of the season and still be in the league at the time of our selections. Another point to make about our picks is that they are based solely on 2012 statistical performance. Whether a player is his organization’s top prospect or just roster filler is immaterial to us when it comes to our selections

San Antonio’s Jonathan Galvez (0.327/.407/.520) would have been the easy choice to man 2B but with just 26 games played this season he didn’t make the service time cutoff. At catcher Frisco’s Zach Zaneski (0.321/.390/.477) was also passed over due to service time, though I did consider blurring the criteria for the cutoff given the physical demands of his position.

One of the toughest decisions to make was at SS where Arkansas’ Jean Segura and Frisco’s Jurickson Profar made it a three way race along with my eventual selection. There is no doubt that Profar (#2 in our pre-season Top-100) and Segura (#73 in our Top-100) who has turned it on after a slow April are both better long term prospects and more likely to stick at SS. However, Rutledge is the one having the best statistical season both offensively and defensively right now.

Incidentally, Profar was also the final cut from the team for the DH slot which speaks to the type of player he is and the type of season he’s having.

Promotions watered down the quality of the outfield crop as Wil Myers (Naturals) and Brandon Barnes (Hooks) would have been easy selections to team with Springfield’s Taveras.

On the pitching side of the equation the rotation is very strong despite Triple-A promotions for A.J. Griffin, Jake Odorizzi, John Gast and most recently Daniel Straily (who leads the minors in SO) to name a few.

All eight Texas League teams are represented on the below 17-player team. Tulsa has the most representatives with four while San Antonio and Corpus Christi aren’t far behind with three each. Springfield and Frisco both have a pair of players while Arkansas, Midland and Northwest Arkansas have just one player on the roster.
