Sprouts: Mariners, Royals, Dodgers, Tigers and Reds

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s Monday and time for another edition of Sprouts! I hope your weekend treated you well, and far better than the Chiefs who have now been outscored 89-10 in the last two weeks.

Over in Detroit, Doug Fister has been nothing less than a savior and a godsend since the Tigers acquired him from Seattle. On that day (July 30th) the Mariners received Charlie Furbush, Casper Wells and Chance Ruffin – also known as the PTBNL in the deal. They also received a 20-year old 3B (he turned 21 on September 1st) who happens to be the topic of one of Harrison Crow’s columns on Sodo Mojo.

Before moving on I want to mention a really cool “cloud community” project that Harrison and the rest of the Sodo staff have started up. It’s The Minor League Pitching Project and if you have a good knowledge of the M’s minor league system I hope you will participate.

Moving on … This year the run of losing has continued for the Royals, but there is a lot of hope in Kansas City as many of the team’s top prospects have reached the majors and have started to contribute. The news is even better down on the farm in Triple-A as the Omaha Storm Chasers recently captured their first Pacific Coast League title in their history. For some more details, Kings of Kauffman front man Michael Engel has you covered.

Next we turn our attention to Dodgerland where Kenny Shulsen has a wonderful read on who should be considered the Dodgers rookie league MVP of 2011. Check it out and learn all about O’Koyea Dickson and Joc Pederson who were teammates on the Ogden Raptors for much of the season.

Now that the minor league season has all but wrapped up we can officially move on to the season of prospect lists and prospect reviews. Over on Motor City Bengals, John Verburg, wrote about some of the Tigers prospects who have seen their stock go up after the 2011 season. He also wrote a companion piece featuring prospects who saw their stock drop, but I’m going to keep it positive and link to the stock up side of the equation.

Finally over on Blog Red Machine, Steve Engbloom wrote a little about the 5 prospects that received postseason recognition.
