Sprouts: Zach Lee, Cito Culver, Wil Myers and Royals Catchers

facebooktwitterreddit

Where in the world does the time go? The last time I published Sprouts was July 25th. Here we are 32 days later and I’m failing miserably in my goal to do this on a weekly basis. Oh well, lots of room for improvement I suppose!

This week I wanted to pass along/promote 2 articles from Bullpen Banter, one from I-70 Baseball and also link to some of my recent work over on Kings of Kauffman. So sit back with a beverage and enjoy some content on birthday boy Cito Culver, Zach Lee, Wil Myers and a slew of thoughts on the Royals minor league catchers.

When the New York Yankees tabbed high school SS Cito Culver as their 1st round pick (32nd overall) in the 2010 draft, it raised more than a few eyebrows. He turns 19 today and as Al Skorupa mentions in the article, Culver is still quite young relative to his New York-Penn League peers. He’s hit 0.256/.332/.346 so he hasn’t wowed anyone yet, but he’s stayed afloat which is worth something. Many considered his selection an overdraft at the time and he hasn’t done anything all that compelling to change anyone’s mind along those lines. For a wonderfully written up-to-date scouting report on the Yankees young SS prospect check out what Al has to say.

Returning to the digital pages of Bullpen Banter, JD Sussman published his thoughts on Los Angeles RHP Zach Lee yesterday. No one was surprised when Lee was picked in the first round last year, but the Dodgers did pull off a shocker when they managed to sign him to a $5.25 million bonus. In doing so they kept him him from attending LSU and kept him off the football field. Check out what JD had to say about the talented RHP based on what he observed from Lee’s start on August 21st.

Over on I-70 Baseball, Todd Fertig published a piece on Royals OF prospect Wil Myers. For anyone thinking they should downgrade Myers at this point, they need only look to Eric Hosmer‘s 2009 season. Wil is still an elite prospect and he is still a huge part of the Royals future. Of course don’t look now but he’s hit 0.323/.462/.548 in his last 10 games and has his overall stat line up to 0.259/.361/.388 with a strong 77 to 50 SO-to-BB rate. It’s easy to forget that Myers is still just 20-years old and will be playing in Omaha next season – as Todd correctly surmises.

Over on Kings of Kauffman I have been writing about all of the catchers in the Royals minor league system. Tonight I published part 3 of 4, so head on over and catch up if you are so inclined.
